Local authorities compared
The Stockholm Environment Institute at York University has published reports on the economic footprints of all the local authorities in Britain (counties, boroughs etc).  The data is from 2002, as published in the 2005 National Footprint Accounts, and includes food, energy, capital investment, travel, consumables, government and other, services, housing and holiday activities.

Click here to enlargeThe average for the UK is 5.6 hectares per person*.  There is a clear correlation between the wealth of the inhabitants of each local authority and the size of the ecological footprint:  in general, richer areas have larger footprints and poorer areas have smaller footprints.

For details on how the footprint is made up, and for the figures for other areas, please click here, then register (free) and look for your county or borough.  The total figures for more areas will be added below shortly.
